The balance between natural veld and/or cultivated pastures and the animals that depend on it is a very important part in any successful farm or natural area.

To optimize this balance, it is important to determine the potential of the pasture before stocking it with a certain number of animals.

This assessment will ensure that the correct number of animals is used to utilize the veld and/or pasture in such a way that both the pasture and animals remain stable or increase in production and quality.

This survey will determine the following:

  • Condition of the soil,
  • Condition of grass basal and crown cover,
  • Grass species composition,
  • Woody species composition,
  • Volume of available vegetation for animals.

Each one of these factors are dynamic, and differ from one location to the other on the same farm.
